Canada Intakes: Fall, Winter and Summer Explained

Canadian colleges and universities admit new students at set points in the year, known as intakes. Choosing the right intake affects which programs are open to you, how much time you have to prepare your documents, and when you can begin your studies. This page explains each intake and how our Surrey team helps students plan around them.

The three main intakes

  • Fall intake (September): The Fall intake is the largest. Most programs accept students in September, and institutions usually offer the widest choice of courses at this time. Applications commonly open nine to twelve months in advance.
  • Winter intake (January): The Winter intake offers a good second opportunity. Many colleges run popular diploma and postgraduate certificate programs in January, although the selection is smaller than in the Fall.
  • Summer intake (May): The Summer intake is limited to selected programs, often at colleges. It can suit students who are ready early and whose chosen program is offered in May.

A typical planning timeline

We recommend starting about twelve months before your preferred intake. In the first three months, students shortlist programs and confirm entry requirements. Over the following three months, they take any required language tests and prepare transcripts and statements. Applications are then submitted, and the remaining time is used for offers, tuition deposits and travel preparation. Deadlines vary by institution, so every timeline should be confirmed with the college or university directly.

How to choose your intake

Consider program availability, your readiness with documents and test scores, your budget, and how competitive the program is. Students with strong preparation often aim for Fall, while those who need more time may plan for Winter.
