Transferring Colleges in Canada

Students sometimes find that a different program or institution is a better fit for their goals. A transfer can make sense when you want a program that matches your career plans, a different location, or a pathway from a diploma towards a degree. A well-planned transfer protects the credits you have already earned.

Common reasons to transfer

Students transfer to move into a program that better suits their career goals, to continue from a college diploma into a university degree, to study closer to family or work, or to find a learning environment that suits them better.

How credit transfer works

Each receiving institution decides which of your completed courses it will recognise. In British Columbia, the BC Transfer Guide shows how courses transfer between participating institutions. In other provinces, institutions assess transcripts and course outlines individually. Keeping your course outlines is therefore essential.

Steps in a transfer

  1. Review your current transcript and identify the program you want to move into.
  2. Confirm entry requirements and transfer-credit policies with the receiving institution.
  3. Gather transcripts, course outlines and a statement explaining your reasons for the change.
  4. Apply and wait for the admission and credit assessment.
  5. Arrange withdrawal from your current institution only after you receive your new offer, and review any refund policies.

Important considerations

International students should check how a transfer affects their study permit conditions and status with official government sources or a licensed professional before making any change. Nexa does not provide immigration advice.
