The Cost of Studying in Canada
Budgeting carefully is one of the most important parts of planning study in Canada. Costs vary by province, city, institution and program, so the figures below are typical ranges intended for early planning. Always confirm current fees with your chosen institution.

Tuition
International tuition at colleges commonly ranges from about CAD 15,000 to CAD 22,000 per year (estimate; confirm with each college). For 2025/2026, Statistics Canada reports average international undergraduate university tuition of CAD 41,746 per year (British Columbia CAD 39,851; Ontario CAD 49,802), and some professional programs cost more.
Accommodation
Shared rental accommodation in Metro Vancouver or Toronto commonly costs CAD 900 to CAD 1,500 per month per person (estimate). Smaller cities are usually less expensive. On-campus residence is available at many institutions, at varying prices.
Living expenses
Students should plan for groceries, transit passes, a mobile phone plan, health insurance, textbooks and personal costs. Together these commonly add CAD 800 to CAD 1,200 per month, depending on the city and lifestyle (estimate). For study permit applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026, IRCC requires a single applicant outside Quebec to show at least CAD 23,448 for one year of living expenses, in addition to tuition and travel.
One-time costs
Application fees, language test fees, document preparation, flights and an initial deposit for housing should be included in your first-year budget.
Ways to manage costs
Compare programs across provinces, consider college diplomas as a pathway, apply early for institutional scholarships and awards, and share accommodation. Students should check part-time work conditions with official sources.
